In the car. In the supermarket. In the gym. On a Sunday morning when nothing is actually wrong.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For years,I didn&#8217;t understand why. I work in an ICU. Trained for high-pressure situations. A CrossFit athlete who shows up, performs and pushes through.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet &#8211; the moment everything went quiet, something would surface. A weight I couldn&#8217;t name. <\/span><b>Anxious thoughts that had no obvious cause.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A nervous system that refused to switch off even when the shift was over, the scrubs were off, and I was sitting on the sofa at home.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not a mindset problem. Not a resilience problem. A physiology problem. On a normal shift, I might perform CPR, support a family through the worst moment of their lives, make hundreds of micro-decisions that affect real outcomes, and absorb the emotional weight of people who cannot speak for themselves.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also coach CrossFit. And my brain still won&#8217;t stop.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><b>What none of them had been told was this:<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The anxious thoughts isn&#8217;t a thinking problem or a coping problem. It isn&#8217;t a sign that something is fundamentally wrong with how they&#8217;re built.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s what happens when a nervous system that has been running on high alert doesn&#8217;t receive the signal that the threat has passed.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it&#8217;s far more common than most people admit. Research shows that nurses experience the highest anxious thoughts levels of all healthcare workers. 56% say they sacrifice their mental health at work. The mindset of &#8220;I help others, I don&#8217;t need help&#8221; runs deep &#8211; and it means most people are managing this completely alone, with approaches that were never designed for the nervous system state they&#8217;re in.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0eff984 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0eff984\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>The Thing Nobody Explains About Anxious Thoughts<\/h2>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-96477e8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"96477e8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is something I wish someone had told me years before my burnout.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Anxious thoughts are not always the cause. Very often, they are the result.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you work in a high-alert environment &#8211; where the stakes are real, where the demands are constant, where there is no room for error &#8211; your nervous system runs in what researchers call <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sympathetic nervous system (SNS) dominance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Fight-or-flight. On. Ready. Scanning for the next thing that needs a response.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is exactly what the job requires. It&#8217;s what makes a good nurse in a high-stakes environment.<\/span><\/p><p><b>The problem is what happens when the shift ends.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SNS doesn&#8217;t have an automatic off switch. It doesn&#8217;t know you&#8217;ve left the hospital. It doesn&#8217;t know the children are in bed, or the gym session is over, or it&#8217;s Sunday afternoon and nothing is actually threatening.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When vagal tone <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the measure of how well the nervous system can shift between states)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is chronically suppressed by accumulated stress, shift work, emotional load, or sustained overload &#8211; the SNS stays dominant.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the anxious thoughts keep coming. In the car. In the supermarket. In the gym. On the quiet Sunday. Not because anything is wrong. Helpful for marking the transition. But when the nervous system is in full sympathetic overdrive, a cup of tea doesn't reach the system generating the anxious thoughts. The ritual helps the conscious mind. The body is still at the hospital.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4e73c6e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4e73c6e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I can&#8217;t transition from work mode to home mode.
