You have probably already tried the obvious things.

Ashwagandha modulates cortisol over time – the stress hormone most directly responsible for that wired feeling even when the body is depleted. L-theanine promotes calm focus without sedation, reducing what people describe as mental chatter – the background noise that continues even when the body is still.
A 2022 meta-analysis in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology confirmed ashwagandha’s efficacy for stress reduction.

The Mental Approach – Proven, But Demanding Exactly What You Have Run Out Of
Meditation has one of the strongest evidence bases of any stress management tool.
Over 200 peer-reviewed studies document structural changes in the brain from regular practice – reduced amygdala reactivity, improved emotional regulation, measurably lower cortisol. For people who practice consistently, it genuinely changes how the nervous system responds to stress over time.

The Real Limitation:

The Direct Nervous System Approach – Powerful, With One Practical Barrier
Of everything on this list, breathwork comes closest to directly influencing the nervous system without any equipment.
The diaphragm and the vagus nerve share a close anatomical relationship. Slow, deliberate breathing – particularly a longer exhale than inhale – directly activates the parasympathetic nervous system. The physiological sigh (a double inhale followed by a long extended exhale) has been shown in peer-reviewed research at Stanford to be one of the fastest methods for reducing physiological stress in real time.
Jiu jitsu legend Rickson Gracie – widely regarded as one of the most complete martial artists to have competed – built his entire recovery and performance system around breathwork. “Breathing was always my best friend as a fighter.” His method – diaphragmatic breathing with a strong emphasis on the exhale – is used by elite athletes and Navy SEALs for the same reason: to downregulate the nervous system under sustained pressure.
The Wim Hof method – which combines controlled hyperventilation with breath retention – works on a similar principle, using deliberate breathing patterns to shift the autonomic state.
As an osteopath, I work with breathing mechanics directly. Restricted diaphragm and ribcage mobility – which I see in almost every patient carrying chronic tension – can keep the nervous system in sympathetic dominance simply because the body cannot breathe fully.

The Structural Approach – My Specialty, And Where It Reaches Its Limit
This is the territory I work in every day.
I place this above breathwork for one reason: breathwork works with the nervous system through the breath. Physical release works with it through the body itself – the tissue, the fascia, the places where tension has been living for months without you noticing. As an osteopath, I can tell you that releasing what the body is holding physically sends a different and often faster signal than changing how you breathe.

Which raises the question: what would it look like to work at the level of the system itself – not what it produces?

I want to be honest about something that took me time to articulate clearly – and that most patients find useful when they hear it.
