Tired, anxious, bloated, achy, sleeping badly: most people treat these as separate problems. A brain expert explains why they are often one problem, a single impaired nerve, and how to recognise it.
You probably do not think of them as connected.
The tiredness that sleep does not fix, the anxious thoughts that will not quiet, the gut that acts up for no reason, the nights you lie awake.
The aches, the frequent colds, the sense that you are just not running right.
Most people treat these as separate problems and chase them with separate fixes, sometimes with a different specialist for each.
What if they are not separate?

This is one of the clearest signs of a weak vagal brake.
Your threat detection is meant to flag a danger and then go quiet once it has passed.
When the vagus cannot bring you back down, that alarm stays on, so your mind keeps scanning and locking onto the same worries, which is exactly what a negative thinking loop is.
